Abstract

The present work has been developed in the frame of a European Research Project (ProBell - Maintenance and Protection of Bells, contract number 015684), aimed to the maintenance and protection of bells. One of the project goals is to develop a procedure to assess the sound of the bell before its casting, considering only the bell and clapper drawings.

In this work, a physically-based sound synthesis software for the evaluation of bell acoustic features is introduced, which uses a set of parameters (modal frequencies and modal weights) extracted from a bell profile through finite element analysis. Numerical simulations, performed by using ANSYS® Ls-dyna and ANSYS® 11.0 are presented along with the description of the sound synthesis algorithm and its implementation. An application of the described procedure starting from real bell profiles provided by Fonderia Colbachini (Padova) is given in the paper.
