modeFRONTIER use for Vehicle Dynamics at Force India F1

Fina Ernesto - Force India Formula One (India)

Abstract

Traditional force and moment measurement techniques can be impractical for the characterisation of racing tyres in a race event scenario.
A technique to identify tyre model parameters for vehicle handling simulation has been investigated which does not rely on extensive additional sensors for the test vehicle. Tyre model calibration is achieved with Mode Frontier by means of a genetic algorithm. A full vehicle model, developed with Simpack, is run in open loop by Mode Frontier. Mode Frontier tunes some of the tyre model parameters in order to minimise the error between estimated tyre forces and calculated ones in Simpack.
Lateral tyre forces are not directly measured but estimated by applying an extended and adaptive Kalman filter to vehicle data.
As a result changes to physical tyre properties and tyre–surface interaction for specific conditions can be rapidly incorporated in handling and lap time simulations within a racing environment.
