Numerical modeling of thermoelectric contacts

Abstract

Due to the growing demand of electric power, the reduction of the available space within the vehicles and the persistent need of costs reduction, the thermoelectric dimensioning of the fuse carrier/relay central units have become increasingly complex: the analyses are indeed meant to investigate advanced (mostly from the dimensional point of view) optimized designs, which allow to satisfy the imposed requirements.
The thermal power generated inside the central unit proves to be a main parameter to maintain the temperature below the maximum value fixed by the materials (and surface treatments) that constitute the plastic parts (central unit envelope, fuses shells, relays envelope), the metallic parts (busbar, terminals, fuse foils, relay pins) and the cables. Within this framework the use of a software like ANSYS allows to perform complex thermoelectric analyses, which permit to evaluate potentially critical situations for the central units and to solve possible issues by modifying loads and/or layout.
A particular attention has been devoted to the numerical modeling of the thermoelectric contacts, since they have a great impact on the generation of thermal power.
