Abstract |
This document describes the methodology which has been adopted for the analysis of MTAP2550 LRV Los Angeles structural crashworthiness. Vehicle crash is a dynamic phenomena featuring a complex interaction between structural and inertial behaviour. It is generally recognised that in a typical collision the end structure experiences first the impact and is interested by large deformations in the impact region. Due to geometrical complexities of rail vehicle structures and to large plastic deformations, FE computer programs with elasto-plastic dynamic analysis capabilities have been used (LS-DYNA). A dynamic analysis with LS-DYNA has been performed to evaluate the static force-deflection curves, the structural accelerations and the energy absorbtion including the strain-rate sensitivity of the material and eventually the structural inertia effects in collision. The dynamic equations of motion are solved with a suitable numerical integration procedure. The analysis results provide information about force-time curves between trains, decelerations and estimates of the levels of structural crushing. The axial load carrying capabilities and force-deflection curves for the end structure part are obtained also using the finite element code by LS-DYNA considering geometry and material non-linearity. |
