Abstract |
A numerical optimization procedure has been setup coupling a parametric CAD model, a structured mesh generator and a Navier-Stokes solver within the modeFRONTIER environment. The performance of gradient and genetic based algorithms have been evaluated on a typical 2D aerodynamic design case. The procedure has been applied to the design and optimization of a 3D winglet suitable for a medium size business jet class aircraft at cruising condition. Significant effort has been addressed to the development of an efficient CAD model parameterization and several preliminary optimization cycles have been carried out with the aim of defining the opportune optimization strategy, in term of variables selection, constraints and targets definition. A final single objective optimization leaded to a successful design of a device able to provide a significant performance improvement even with a strong constraints in the wing root bending moment increase. |
