Abstract |
Nowadays, the environmental concern poses a great challenge to ICE designers. Particularly, the generalized use of catalytic converters requires a good uniformity of the exhaust flow entering the monolith, in order to obtain an high conversion efficiency, together with low pressure gradients, in order not to damage the monolith framework. Thus, the achievement of these objectives deeply influences the design of exhaust pipes. The use of a joined approach based on CFD and optimizing tools, i.e. modeFRONTIER, can highly improve the design fulfilling different objectives: high engine performance, high emission reduction and a long durability of the catalytic converter. In this paper the development of a methodology for the optimization of the exhaust flow of an high performance engine will be presented. Particularly, the morphing capability of the CFD code Star-CCM+ will be exploited, by the optimizer, to modify the geometry of the exhaust pipes in order to achieve the aforementioned objectives automating the design process. |
